King Richard IV was the King of England from 1485 to 1498, following the reign of his uncle, [[King Richard III]], who was killed in [[The Battle of Bosworth Field]]. His time as King was wiped from historical records after [[Henry Tudor]] ascended the throne on Richard IV's death and changed history. He was known for his feisty attitude, and his particular displeasure of Turkish people.

== Marriage and Family ==
Richard IV was married to [[Gertrude of Flanders]]. It is likely that Richard enjoys the title and power of King of Flanders, as was customary in the 15th century when a queen regnant married. Their marriage is not particularly happy; Gertude describes her husband as a "steaming great ox", complains of his sexual demands and stating that she wishes she'd married a enunch. She is sometimes affectionate to her husband, however, as shown after his recovery from the plague. Richard believes his wife to be "insatiable".

They have two sons, [[Prince Harry]] and [[Prince Edmund]]. Of the two sons, Richard enjoys the closest relationship with his eldest, Harry, whom he is extremely proud of and takes time to tutor in the ways of fighting, statecraft and diplomacy.Harry is shown fighting and sat at his father's side and has numerous titles and honours bestowed upon him by Richard. When Richard is unable to govern his country due to absence or ill-health, he leaves Harry acting as his regent, something which breeds immense resentment in Edmund.

==Military Activity==

He readily participated in [[The Battle of Bosworth Field]].

He also underwent a crusade to free the Holy Land from the Turks in [[Born To Be King]], apparently emerging victorious. He managed to defeat a whole horde of the Turkish with just a small knife used for peeling fruits.

He was keen to make European alliances, arranging for [[Prince Edmund]] to marry the [[Princess Infanta|Spanish Infanta]] so he would not have to wage war with them.

==Death==

King Richard IV's reign ended in 1498, when he poisoned along with the rest of his family and kingdom, after [[Percy]] accidently poisoned a whole vat of wine intended to kill only the members of the group intending to kill the royal family and proclaim themselves in charge.

Witchsmeller Persuivant is the fifth episode of the first series of Blackadder.

== Plot ==
In 1495, the [[Black Plague]] is ravaging Europe, and infects [[King Richard IV]] rendering him more deranged than usual; when [[Prince Edmund]] comes to visit, the King nearly stabs him to death. [[Prince Harry]] summons the [[Privy Council]], which includes Edmund and Percy. The Council agrees (over Edmund's objections) that the Plague is the result of witchcraft and summons the [[Witchsmeller Pursuivant]].

The Pursuivant suggests a test to discover the witches in their midst: he will place a dagger and a crucifix on a table, and blindfold the suspect — if he chooses the crucifix, he is innocent, but if he chooses the dagger, he is guilty. When Edmund is selected as the first suspect, the Witchsmeller blindfolds him and switches the two objects around; Edmund accidentally chooses the dagger and is condemned as a witch.

As a courtesy, Edmund is granted a trial. Percy and [[Baldrick]] are appointed defense attornies, but the Witchsmeller silences them before they can even start their case by condemning them as witches, who obviously can't be trusted to tell to truth. He then mounts a sham prosecution, attacking Edmund for having a cat named Bubbles ("short for Beezlebubbles!") and questioning Edmund's horse, who is declared a hostile witness for refusing to testify. The following day, the horse mysteriously dies, but not before leaving a signed confession. The prosecution then calls a peasant woman who claims to have given birth to Edmund's child — a poddle. The trio are found guilty and sentenced to burn at the stake. The only consolation Edmund receives is a doll from [[Gertrude of Flanders|his mother]] who cryptically promises to "see what [she] can work out."

On the day of the execution, Edmund obscenely rebukes Baldrick's last-minute "cunning plan" and offers a feeble confession. When the pyre is lit, Edmund panics and drops the doll — which bears a striking resemblance to the Witchsmeller — and the would-be executioner mysteriously burns to death. The accused witches are spared, believing it to be the result of Baldrick's plan.

Meanwhile, a cured King Richard greets Queen Gertrude and daughter-in-law [[Princess Leia of Hungary|Leia]] asking about the commotion outside. The Queen assures him that everything will work out, and winks at the audience; sparks fly out of her eyes, implying that ''she'' is the real witch. Leia is the only witness to the incident.

The Queen of Spain's Beard is the fourth episode of the first series of Blackadder.

==Plot==

In 1492, [[Richard IV]]'s court is in disarray. In order to secure Spain's allegiance in a war with France by marrying [[Prince Harry]] to the [[Princess Infanta]] of Spain. Said plan, however, could not work, as Harry had already been concurrently engaged to several other noblewomen. Richard then reluctantly chooses [[Prince Edmund]] to marry the Infanta.

Edmund, meanwhile, swears off women after being violently rejected by a woman who thought he was Harry. When he hears that he is to be married to the Infanta, however, he is excited by the prospect of a beautiful princess — only to find that the Infanta is overweight and homely. He is repulsed by her, but she falls instantly in love with him. Richard sets the wedding for the following day.

[[Baldrick]hatches a plan: Edmund should pretend to "prefer the intimate company of men". Edmund then minces to court dressed in flamboyant clothes and wearing makeup. The plan fails, however, as the Infanta thinks that Edmund is only wearing traditional Spanish dress to please her. Edmund then reasons that he cannot marry the Infanta if he is already married, and so orders Baldrick to abduct a Reverend and [[Percy]] to find a suitable bride. Percy chooses Tally Applebottom but she identified herself as ''Mrs.'' Applebottom at the altar — confirmed moments later when [[Thomas Applebottom|''Mr.'' Applebottom]] arrives, threatening Edmund with a scythe.

That night, Edmund schemes that he could still get out of the marriage if the Infanta were not a virgin, and sends Baldrick to join the Infanta in bed, pretending to be Edmund, while Edmund went to inform his father. Richard brushes the revelation aside, as only ''one'' of them has to be a virgin (that one, of course, being Edmund).

The marriage ceremony starts ponderously, so much so that the Infanta starts talking fast at the vicar with impatience. Her translator quotes, "Yes, Yes, stupid person, hurry up. I wish to entwine him (Blackadder) again in my broad thighs!". The wedding is ultimately cancelled in the nick of time, however, when Spain and France join forces. Realising the only country in Europe England can ally with now is Hungary, the Infanta is booted out of court, and Edmund is then set to marry [[Princess Leia of Hungary]] — an eight-year-old girl; however, Edmund seems resigned to this, happy that he escaped the Infanta.
