The Young Crone was a young witch who served as a receptionist for The Wise Woman. If anyone wished to see the wise woman they had to pass the young crone's test: know that the wise woman was a woman and that she was wise. She was surprised when Lord Blackadder successfully guessed this and was told that she would be getting a wild stab in the dark if she didn't start being more helpful. When she told Lord Blackadder where the wise woman lived he held up a purse of money which he wasn't going to give to her.
